Tri-Lakes Tribune Feb 21, 1985:
Party At Palmer Lake Town Hall Has Council Rethinking Rules
Following a recent party, Palmer Lake trustees are rethinking their policy on renting the town hall.

Trustee Chuck Jones said he drove by the hall when the party was going on to see teenagers at the windows and another teen riding a skateboard inside.

Marshal Dale Smith said a resident told him alcohol and drugs were being used at the party. The hall, it was later found out, was rented by a 17-year-old youth.

The youth has asked for the hall again, but trustees said no last week in discussing the problem at the board meeting.

Jones said following that party, it was found that an obscenity had been written on the wall, and it took a cleanup man about five hours to scrub the floors and pick up after the party.

"We're lucky the pictures on the wall weren't damaged," said Jones. Historical pictures depicting the town's past have been hung on the walls, but none appeared to have been defaced.

However, the town officer on duty at the time, John Cameron, said that the February 2 party has been "blown all out of proportion."

He said he watched the party all evening and found the only thing amiss was the band, which had trouble with its sound system.

"There were about 75 teenagers, most of them from Colorado Springs," said Cameron, who at one point stayed 20 minutes inside the hall during the party. He said he saw no drugs or alcohol consumed. He said he paid the party another visit before it broke up about midnight.

Cameron said he also gave five teens a ride to the 7-11 store in Monument when they didn't have a ride.

Last month, the council was confronted by several nonprofit groups which protested the $75 a day rental, along with a $15 custodian fee. City officials said the fees have been in effect for two years, but never enforced.

Trustees last Thursday night said they were considering asking for a damage deposit and establishing fees for organizations that are for profit.
